About the Crystal Agate
Brown crystal agate sits at the warm end of the mineral range: caramel, tobacco, smoke gray and cream, often within one piece. The banding is fine and the color moves gradually, so the face holds together as one tone from across a room and breaks into detail up close.
Agate of this color is translucent at its edges, and the crystal sections catch light where the banded stone does not. Pieces of similar tone are chosen so the face reads evenly, but the grain of each one is its own.
How It's Made
Pieces of brown crystal agate are joined with a clear epoxy resin, poured over them so the whole face sets firm, and the finished clock measures 9" x 14". The resin fills between the stones and keeps the surface level. Every edge is electroformed, real metal grown onto the stone until it has thickness of its own and permanently bonded to it, rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off. Gold picks up the caramel, rose gold reads warmer still, and silver cools the whole face down.
