The Sign

A slab with one edge cut on the slant, so the plate is a quadrilateral rather than a rectangle. A thin brass rule follows the outline. The number sits high and offset, the street name set small along the lower edge. No motif of any kind.

The angle is the whole design. Take it away and there is nothing left, which is the point.

Craftsmanship

Grown in real copper and brass over the sculpted form rather than cast. On a piece with no ornament, everything rests on the edge: the slant has to be dead straight and the rule has to hold one width around a shape with no symmetry to hide behind. Rule and lettering are cut at their own heights, 2 to 5 mm off the ground, which is what stops the plate reading as a printed panel. It is 8 to 10 mm thick and solid all the way through, and that thickness is visible from the side, which matters on a design this bare.

Readable from the road

Offsetting the number is not styling. It gives the figures the full height of the plate to sit in, so they can be set larger than a centered layout would allow. Raised brass over a ground left dark supplies the contrast; the offset supplies the size.

Built for outside

Sealed under a UV-protective finish. It will not fade, chalk or lift in sun or rain, and there is no steel in it to rust and mark the cladding below.

Personalization

The number and the street name. Send them exactly as you want them set. Short is better on this design; if your street name is long, the Streamline Moderne or the Clipped Corner will carry it more comfortably. A design preview comes back by email before anything is made.

The wide sizes suit the geometry best. At 10 x 6 the slant has room to read as a deliberate cut rather than a mistake.

Mounting

Three ways, chosen at checkout.

• Keyhole slots: two screws in the wall. Worth taking care with the level here, because an asymmetric plate shows a tilt more than a symmetrical one.
• Peel-and-stick tape: sealed strips already applied to the back. No drilling, which suits fiber cement and composite cladding.
• Floating stud mount: reinforced studs that hold it clear of the wall. This is the right choice for the design; the shadow under the slant is most of the effect.
