About the Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz is quartz that has taken on a brown-gray cast, and the depth of it changes with the thickness of the stone. Thin sections read as a light haze, heavier ones go toward charcoal, and the color is even enough that the banding shows as a change in tone rather than a change in hue.
Unlike the pale agates it has real transparency, so a lamp does not just light the surface, it opens up the stone and shows how far down the color goes. Against a wooden table it settles into a warm gray.
How It’s Made
The stone is cut to a 9" x 14" rectangle and the full edge is electroformed, metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off. A solid brass handle is set at each short end, in an open leaf or laurel arch shape. Gold on smoky quartz gives the strongest contrast, silver keeps the piece cool and quiet, and rose gold sits between the two.

Each tray is cut from its own piece of stone, so the tone runs lighter or darker and the markings never repeat.

Use and Care
