About the Black Agate
Black agate is dense and close to opaque, and its interest lies in what interrupts the black: thin gray and white bands of quartz running in parallel lines or tight concentric rings. Against the dark ground those bands read almost like chalk.
Polished, the surface is glassy and mirror-dark, so it picks up candlelight and the color of whatever sits on it. Only the thinnest edges pass any light, which is why pale food and clear glass stand out so sharply on it.
How It’s Made
The stone is cut to a square plate and the cut edge is electroformed, with real metal grown onto the agate until the rim has thickness and is permanently bonded, rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off. Two handles are then fitted, and the handles are solid brass, offered as a classic scroll, a leaf scroll, a laurel arch or an open leaf. Rim and handles carry the same finish.

The stone is natural, so the number of pale bands, their width and the exact outline of the square change from tray to tray.
