About the Agate
Zebra agate is named for what it does: stripes of black and white running across the stone in roughly parallel lines. The widths are irregular and the edge of each stripe is crisp rather than blended.
The white bands are the translucent ones and the black close to opaque, so in strong light the face reads as bright lines over dark ground. A cut across a crystal pocket interrupts the stripes with a rough clear patch.
How It’s Made
One thick irregular slab, about 4" in diameter, left in the outline it was cut to. The edge is electroformed, real metal grown onto the stone until it has real thickness and permanently bonded there rather than sitting on top as a leaf or coating. Against a black and white stone the finishes do different work: gold is warm and visible on the white bands, silver disappears into them, rose gold leaves a faint blush at the rim.
