The Plaque

Portrait format with a stepped outline, and down one side a cooking spoon sculpted in relief with a tomato and a few leaves gathered at its base. The recipe itself fills the field, in the handwriting it was written in, with the title above and the signature left wherever the writer put it.

Recipe cards do not survive. They get greasy, they get lost in a move, they go in a box after a funeral. This is the same card, in metal, at a size you can read from the stove.

The handwriting is the point

We reproduce what is on the card exactly: the abbreviations, the crossings-out if you want them kept, the way the last two lines get cramped because the space ran out. It is not retyped and it is not tidied. Anyone in the family will recognize the hand before they read the words.

Craftsmanship

Copper and brass grown over the sculpted form, so the writing and the spoon are real metal with genuine thickness rather than a coating that can flake. The spoon and the writing are cut at their own heights, anywhere from 2 to 5 mm off the ground, so the motif has real modeling in it rather than sitting flat like a stencil. The plaque is 8 to 10 mm thick, solid all the way through. Depth is what keeps a whole recipe readable in metal: each line of text sits in its own shadow instead of dissolving into the background.

Personalization

The recipe in the original hand, and a title line. Photograph the card flat, in daylight, with all four edges in frame; if the card is stained or torn, send it as it is, we work from what is there rather than cleaning it up. A design preview comes back by email before anything is made.

Built to last

Sealed under a UV-protective finish. It can hang in a kitchen without trouble: steam, splashes and the heat off a range do not affect it, and it wipes clean.

A full recipe with a list of ingredients and a method needs 8 x 8 or larger to stay comfortable to read at arm's length. Short recipes and single methods work smaller.

Mounting

Three ways, chosen at checkout.

• Keyhole slots: two screws in the wall, lifts off for cleaning.
• Peel-and-stick tape: sealed strips already applied, good on tile and painted plaster.
• Floating stud mount: reinforced studs that stand it clear of the wall.

Hardware and instructions are included with all three.

Where it works

Kitchen wall, beside the range, over a counter, in a pantry. It is a working object as much as a keepsake, and it is better used than admired.

Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. No abrasives, no degreasers, no brass polish.
