About the Agate
Green agate holds its color in rings: bottle green where the stone is dense, softening outward through moss and sage to a gray-white rim. Some bands run narrow and tight, others open up wide, which is what gives cut agate its contour-map look.
The stone behaves differently at its edges. Thin bands pass a little light and glow green against a window; the deeper green stays opaque and hard, so one plate can look both lit and solid at once.
How It’s Made
This is a composite plate. Sections of agate in matching green tones are joined with a clear epoxy resin poured over them until they set as one firm rectangle of 10" x 15". Around the stone runs an electroformed brass trim, real metal grown onto the agate and permanently bonded rather than a coating that can rub off. The handles are plain and modern, without scrollwork, and they are solid brass.
