About the Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli is the densest blue in the collection, an ultramarine that goes nearly navy in the thick parts and lightens where the stone thins. Lapis usually carries two other marks with it: pale threads of calcite drifting through the blue, and small gold-colored flecks of pyrite that catch a point of light.
Unlike agate, lapis does not pass light through. It stays opaque under a lamp and reads as flat, saturated color, which is why it holds its blue in a dim dining room where paler stones fade out.
How It’s Made
A rectangular tray of 10" x 15". Stone of similar tone is joined with a clear epoxy resin poured over the pieces to make one firm plate, and the edge is trimmed with electroformed brass, metal grown onto the stone and permanently bonded rather than a leaf that can lift. Plain modern handles are fitted at either end in solid brass. Gold trim pushes the blue warmer; silver keeps it cold and graphic.

Natural lapis varies in depth of blue and in how much calcite and pyrite it shows, so each plate is its own.

Use and Care
