About the Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral, and that is why it looks the way it does. The blue comes from lazurite and runs from a mid royal to a dense midnight; through it move white streaks of calcite and small brassy specks of pyrite that catch the light like grains of metal.

The stone is opaque, so it does not glow from behind the way agate does. It reads instead as a solid field of color that changes with the light in the room, going flat and velvety in shade and hard and saturated under a lamp.

How It’s Made

The lapis is hand hewn and worked into a large 10" x 15" panel, so the outline of every piece and the pattern across the face differ from clock to clock. The edges are electroformed, with real metal grown onto the stone until it has thickness and permanently bonded to it rather than a leaf or coating that can rub off. Gold is the historic pairing with lapis and picks up the pyrite; silver reads cooler, and rose gold is also made.

A Gift For

Lapis is the piece people choose when the gift is meant to be remembered: a milestone anniversary, a retirement, a significant birthday. The deep blue also works as a wedding gift, and it is a strong choice for corporate and client gifting.

Care

Dust with a soft dry cloth and nothing more. Water, solvents and polishes mark the stone and dull the electroformed metal, so keep them well away.
