The Sign

An arched plate with a fan of rays opening across the whole upper half, each ray tapering as it rises. The number sits directly beneath the fan and the family name runs along a band at the foot.

The rays are not background. They are cut as deep as the numerals and they are the first thing the eye finds.

Craftsmanship

Real copper and brass grown over the sculpted form rather than poured into a mold. A fan of this kind needs every ray to stay parallel-sided and separate from its neighbor down to the point where they converge; casting closes those gaps first. Rays, band and lettering are cut at their own heights, 2 to 5 mm off the ground, so the fan has real depth in it. The plate is 8 to 10 mm thick and solid all the way through.

Readable from the road

The fan works like an arrow. It funnels attention down onto the number, which stands in raised brass over a ground left dark and reads as contrast from the street. Deco signage was designed to be read from a moving car in the first place, and the geometry still does that job.

Built for outside

Sealed under a UV-protective finish. Sun will not fade it, rain will not mark it, and there is no steel in the body to rust and streak the wall below.

Personalization

The house number and the family name. An established year can go on the band with the name if you want one, so long as the name is short enough to leave room. Send the wording exactly as it should appear. A design preview comes back by email before anything is made.

Because the fan takes the top half, the lettering has the bottom half to live in. A number and a family name are comfortable from 7 x 7 up; adding a year as well wants 8 x 8.

Mounting

Three ways, chosen at checkout.

• Keyhole slots: two screws in the wall, easy to level against the flat base.
• Peel-and-stick tape: sealed strips already applied to the back. No drilling into render or tile.
• Floating stud mount: reinforced studs that hold it clear of the wall. Worth choosing here, because the shadow behind the fan doubles its depth.

Where it works

A deco or mid-century entrance, an apartment door, a rendered facade, a lobby wall. It also sits surprisingly well on plain modern brick, where the geometry is the only ornament in sight.
